Cricket is always referred to as a “Gentleman’s Game”. This was visibly seen in the 22nd Annual Encounter of the much looked forward to “Big Match”. This match was played on the Thurstan College Cricket Grounds on 25th March 2017.
The first encounter was in 1996 and 22 such encounters have been played so far with perfect behavior patterns from both schools be it among players or spectators. This 50 over game is played between the 1st XI Cricket Teams of both schools.
The matches are played for the Lalith Athulathmudali Memorial Trophy annually. So far, Wycherley international School has registered 11 wins, while Colombo International School has 10 victories and one was a draw in 2008. After 3 successive wins in 2014, 2015 and 2016 for Wycherley. The match of 2017 was won by Colombo International School. These are the glorious uncertainties of Cricket. Shennon Ruhunuhewa was adjudged as the best Fielder. It was a memorable day for Wycherley’s Tariq Haniff, who was awarded a special trophy for having played in seven consecutive Big Matches.
